THE VACCINATION ACT.
AN AMENDMENT REQUIRED. Per Press Association. CHIMSTCHURCH, July 15. When dealing with a number of vaccination cases an the Court this morning, -Mr V. G. Day, S.M., pointed out that, an absurdity existed in the Vaccinal ion Act. He stated tlhat where a parent was ciiarged with failing to vaccinate a child and appeared to answer the charge, the law allowed a Magistrate to make an ordc-r tihafc the operation should be carvied out withiu a specified time, but if a parent did not appear the Magistrate had no alternative but tin tine the father or mother of the child. "it is an absurd, position," he added ; " but here is the i»tatute 'and you cannot, get away from it." Mr L. C. Williams, who instituted the> proceedings, pointed out that the Magistrate could line tho parents up to 4li->, and to his mind they would soon get tired of that. Mr Day agreed that Uiey could be brought up every week if necessary, but if they were willing to pay 40s ■every time they were charged tbey would be able to xhe law at. defiance. Addressing Mr Williams, Mr Day said that as Parliament was now sitting he (Mr Williams) should make representations with a view to grilling the Act amended.
