UNDERGROUND DRAINAGE

To the Editor of the "Timaru Herald." Sir, —An important alteration in the central scheme was mooted at the last meeting of the Borough Council which calls for comment. 'lhe original scheme promised a sewer from George street to nigh water maTk at the powder magazine, with a septic tank there, to receive and liquefy the sewage, the eiftuenb Aischaiging into the sea. Guessing flora the few i-emaiks made by Ihe Mayor a' last meeting, it would appear that Mr Marchant now proposes to make the sewer larger—of concrete discharging into a smaller tank, thence at half tide flowing into the f*a. Ihe remarks are vague but convey ihe impression that the septic tank is to be eliminated, and that the sewage is to be discharged about low water info the t>en. The alteration will certainly save the cost- of a peptic tank, and allow a !i:tle more fall in the long sewer, but it will perpetuate a maximum disc-haige at low water only, and probably a flooded sewei at other states of the tide. The Mayor •,ugges's that this alteration should be submitted to Mr E. Cilthbert, of Christchurch, and Councillor Hawkey adds that Dr Mason's opinion should also be obtained. I suggest that the scope of the' inquny should be widened to include the substitution of our own ,ready-maae oui falls. The question; is now an engineering one and not a quarrel between the local bodies,—l' ami/etc., D. STUART.
