BUILDING RAILWAYS.
A Per Press 1 ' Association.'' - GISBORNEi/May-28.: v An enthusiastic public meeting .was held last night,' when a; resolution' was passed congratulating Ministers oh the ; .completion and opening of' the'railway extension to Waikoku, miles from ' Gis-borne, and urging more rapid construction of the line to: enable it to. tap the timber forests at Motu. '--:''.-■ The Hon. J. McGowan attended the meeting, the Hon. J. Carroll being absent owing to indisposition. In - replying, the Minister, stated that seventeen railways were in course of construction, and these could not be carried oh without money. He, however, would be prepared to fight for a fair share for the Gisborne raiU way.' He defended the Government's prudence in adopting a moderate borrowing policy, and mentioned the fact with pride that for present railway tion the Government did not heed-to goto the Old Country for a- single shilling. He the need for more adequate rolling stock, and-would make representations in 'favour'-.'of'-the line being suppKed with a more powerful engine than the one which failed to pull/the train, up, a slight incline that' ;day 'till \ the people I had got off to relieye the road.
