MOORS OUTWITTED.
BRITISH PEER'S STRATAGEM. "Tie Heraldo" of Madrid, published a, telegram on March 26th from Las Pallnas which States that, according to the account given by the officers of the French cruiser Cassard, as published in a local paper, the rescue of the crew of the trawler Baleine, who were captured by the Moors afc Cape Juby, was not due to the intervention of a Kaid, but to a stratagem of Lord Mountmorres. Lord Mounmorres had gone especially to Cape Juby with the object of trying to save the French sailors, and on his arrival there entered into negotiation with the Moors for their release. The captors demanded a ransom of £50,000. Lord Mountmorres invited the two principal members of the tribe on board his yacht to effect a settlement of the affair. They duly proceeded on board, where they were informed by Lord Mountmorres that they would be "kept prisoners as hostages for the livts of the Trench sailors. They were told that they must immediately give orders to their tribesmen to hand over their captives to the Sultans troops. They complied with this
demand, and the crew of the Baleine were taken to the Kasbah, where they remained in safety until the arrival of the Uist>ard to take them off. The sailors state that they were alltreated during the first few days of their captivity.
