THE WARD SYSTEM.

(To the Kditor of the " Tiniaiu Herald.") Sir,--On behalf of mw.elf and your leadens I have to thank you for the- very interesting information you have given, in response to my request on the ward system. Your leader of this morning in wry appropriate anil de*als with the .subject fully and fairly. I have also to) thank your correspondent. " Excouncillor" for his little bit of ancient tiisl-oy of how the syi-itcni came t<> get ei-slablished here. 1 agree with " Undivided" that there would be more interest, taken in municipal affairs, with tho election of councillois done by the whole boiough instead of each corner, returning their own local man who is not often known by tne bulk of the electors. Instead of the same councillors being returned year after year we would have a. scramble for the honour of being a member of the Borough Council, and 1 am also sure that the men with largo interests in the town would then be induced to come forward. 1 was pleased to read in one of the reports of last- Council meeting that Councillor Bowker and others expressed themselves in favour of the undivided borough. If the Council were to decide by resolution that the wards be done away with, they would have the support of 80 per cent, of the electors of Timaiu. The number of Councillors might with advantage be reduced to nine as suggested by " Undivided " following the example of equally important towns and in some cases having four times the area in Timaru to manage.—l am etc., PROGRESS.
