ATHLETICS

UNITED HARRIERS.

Yesterday afternoon the run of the United Harrier Club took place from the residence of the Rev. Mr Hunt, Theodocia Street-. The hares were D. Keay and H. Furrier, the youngest members of the club, and their* skill certainly reflected great credit upon them. The paper led alon" the Belt, continuing past the Saltwater Creek Hotel, across the adjoining paddocks in the direction of Harlau, then across some very rough and barren country, leading on to the Beaconsfield road, which the" pack followed until they reached the point where the outgoing trail branched off at the Saltwater Creek Hotel. Once or twice during the run a few remarks were made in connection with the distance the two inexperienced hares took the pursuing pack, the trail winding in and out the rough valleys, across some newly ploughed paddocks, and in addition the "fugitives displayed no tittle strategy in the laying of false trails. The sprint home was hotlv contested, and resulted in C. Glanville' being first, C. Fraeer second, and A. Gould, third. Members weie very hospitably entertained by the hosts, tiie abundant" refreshments being enjoyed by all. A few musical items added to the success and enjoyment of the run. Mr W. J. Hogg, in the absence of the captain, thanked Mr and Mrs Hunt, and all who had assisted to make the run so enjoyable, for their kindness and consideration to the club, and for the kind manner in which they had provided for the occasion. Mr Hunt returned thames for the kind expressions, and said that he was only too pleased to further the sport so far as it rested in his_ power. Member.i are reminded of the 3i mile sealed handicap race, to be held next. Thursday, at 2.45 p.m. sharp, and it- is anticipated that all active members of trie club will make a special endeavour to enter for the competition. SOUTH CANTERBURY HARRIERS.

The .South Canterbury Hairiers, for their weekly run yesterday were the guests of Mr K. P. V. Sealy," Wai-iti Road, when •they rati from his residence, Southerndown. Counter attractions were no doubt responsible for the small number present, only 16 attending. C. Glue and R. Clue had charge of the bags, and set out shortly after 5 p.m. On account of complaints about the over-abundance of paper spread on public thoroughfares, the trail laveiii, as is their usual custom, made known to the skipper where to " picK up " th« paper, this point being on vim north end of the quarry. Here some very rough patches w*re Mi tick, which b?siilcs slowing down the pack caused a few of the more reckless to cany a fair amount of mud which made the going very heavy. Once out of the quany the trail led in a northerly direction in the vicinity of the store, and crossing from Wai-iti Road a tin it wan made on to Morgan's load ; then the pack skirted the property of Mr .1. Hopkins, and the golf links, on to Page's road, when a good stretch brought ihe pack through Mr Clay's property, and home was soon sighted. Two or time new members were welcomed, and taking into consideration their first, appearance, stink t" their task admirably. Most refreshing afternoon ts»a was served by the Misses Sealy. for which Mr (J. C Aylen lin the captain's absence) tettimed (hanks, and three cheers were heartily given. Mr Sealy in reply said that it gave his mother and i-isters much pleasttie in again bavin? the Ninth Canterbury Harriers with them fi>r the 'third time, and he congratula'urd th<-;n on their choice of sport .did wished the club every success.
