too, and raupo heads were also" used a« decorative means. In front of the platform was a roomy stage of several broad steps, .loaded with gifts of garden and orchard produce, which if not " first fruits " were all first class, the givers evidently bringing of their best, and as specimens of the harvest, in the widest sense of wie word, the preacher could have pointed to them a» something to be deeply thankful for. The choir led the singing of harvest hymns and sang .suitable anthems. The minister preached appropriate sermonn to good congregations. At the morning service he dwelt upon the importance of the wheat harvest to the world at large, and pointed out that the British had great reason for thankfulness in the possession of great wheat-growing hinds. He recalled the- splendid show of field products made by Canada at the Chrktehurch Exhibition, and referred to me statistics of her immense wheat production. Coming nearer homo he spoke of the productivity of Canterbury, whose soil
and climate combined io make this part of Xew Zealand the wheat granary for the rest. The duty of thankfulness was earnestly insisted on, and the .senium was both interesting and imprtK.«ive. The gifts of produce will be .sold for the bene!it of the rhurch this evening.
