POLICE CASES.

Three charges were preferred against Christian Oberg, a- foreigner—of Iwing drunk in Bcswick street on Friday evening, of having assaulted James Larkiu at. the Strathallan street raihvay crossing, and of resisting a constable in the execution of his duties. Accused pleaded guilty. Sub-inspector Green, in explaining the nature of the clnfrges, mentioned that .Mr Larkin had been temporarily incapacited from attending to iii.s duti-tcs. He furtiier stated that accused, prior to being arrested had been making himself obnoxious all over the town by quarrelling and wanting to fight. James Larkin, crossing-keeper at the Strathallan street raihvay crossing, said that about 7 p.m., when the express tniin was departing, accused was standing the crossing and witness told liim to move on. Accused thereupon struck hiui, knocking him over, and breaking a tooth. Witness said nothing to provoke him—simply told him to move away or he would be run over. Witntes had his Hag in his hand at the time. Constable Wotton said Larkin told him of the assault, and he went to Keswick i-Iroct and arrested accused, who resulted arrest and made an attempt to escape. Accused said he was 27 y<>ans of age. was sony he had struck Larkin, and asked to be dealt with leniently as he had work to go to. Sub-inspector Green said accused had a bad records; he had been in gaol for hon.-e-breaking, theft, resisting the police, etc.

Accused protested that he had behaved himself well latelv.

His Worship said accused had < vid"ntly brought thtse troubles on his head through drinking. He. sentenced him to one month's hard labour on the charge i.f assault, but as the other charges did not appear to be so serious, he would record a conviction and discharge. The Court then rose.
