The first meeting of the newly consti- ! tuted Hospital and Charitable Aid Beard wais held yestei day. Present—J."- Talbot, W. S.- Maslin and; T. Buxton (Temuka) ; W. Goltman, G." Lyall, and P. Studholme (Waimate); J. Craigie (Timaru) ; : 'and' F. J. . LeCren— (Levels). Mr M. - Mullin (Timaru) was absent at Christchurch; . Messrs Butler (Levels') and Gillingham (Mackenzie) are at present absent; from the colony. • ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN:. Mr Coltman moved that Mr Talbot be re-elected chairman, xis the right man in the right' place, and Mr Craigie '■ seconded, both speaking highly of Mr Talbot's long pact servicec. j> * The motion' was carried unanimously with applause, and Mr Talbot returned thanks ior.the honour, and the kind remarks mado about him. . . .. The chairman stated that! the Board would have l t'he : pleasure of receiving ten-, ders for a phildren's ward, the funds,for whic ttiliad been provided by public subscription. •' Tenders were also in hand for additions to the Waimate Hospital, bub for certain reasons with finance, it would be advisable to postpone the acceptance of a tender till Saturday, to enable some enquiries to be made..; The chairman and Messrs Craigie, Lyall,. and Maslin were appointed a committee to; open. and accept a tender, for Waimate ■on Saturday.' '■ The following tenders wer.e received for the erection of the Seddon Memorial Ward:—R. Fohesea; £664 16s, (accepted); ,W. Husband, £704'16s 5 ; Hunt and Werry £714 16s; P. Fester £742; .T. Pringle £776 6s, Miller. Bros. £Bl3 Ids.* The chairman said the money.; collected should be paid over to the Board, and the subsidy could then be applied for. ... GENERAL BUSINESS. . Mr H. A. Glenie withdrew his former offer for horsing the'embulance, and asked for higher rates for distances of ,12 miles and upwards.—Members admitted that the former prices were too low, and: accepted! the amended offer. Members objected to the way the vehicle had been kept, in. a building used for skin sales.—lt was agreed that next Saturday's committee should'sea Mr Glenie about it. The ' Assistant. Inspector of Hospitals wrote,, in reply to an inquiry, re the payment of nurses to be trained for the meutal hospitals, that, it was presumed their services would be worth the remuneraltdon, therefore'the Board 6hould pay their salaries. He did not think it wo old be pood policy for the Government to pay thsir salaries. The Board decided that they cou!d not accept the nurses on these terms.

The matron of the Samaritan- Home, Christ-church, wrote that the crippled boy Francis was sent to Wellington last- February, and they had et-en nothing of him till "he called hi show week. While he was at- their Home his/ conduct wins always good.—The secretaiy said he had made inquiry about the boy at Wellington, and had no* reply yet. The boy had returned to/Christc-huich - The Samari'an Home there' wa,s open to him, or the Old Mens Home here, and the boy referred Christchurch; and he therefore paid his fare to Christchurch.

The secretary reported that 27 patients were adrmit':>ed to the general hospital during the month of November, making 71 treated, of whom 31 had been discharged, 20 cured, 7 relieved, 2 as incurable, and' 2 by death. There were now only four patients in the Talbot Hosp'ltal. where-, the new caretaker had taken up his duties. The Board then rose.
