SERIOUS- DAMAGE. AT MARTON

The second big fira within the. last, month broke about 2 o'clock-. to-day, fttally destroying Mr J. M. Nicols' shop, refreshment. rooms, and bakehouse., Mr B. G. Goebel's i.fruife- and produce merchant, shop, Mr J..' Milligan'scrockery arid iroriinongery, and Mr Max Bornhold's jewellery sho.p,. and dwelling. The water supply;, was cut,-off temporarily,, and when the brigade. got to work Mr. Nico'ls' ...building,. where,the. fire started, was a- mass of flames. The- brigade) worked, splendidly,, and: caved- several Cadi joining^buildings. A fire broke out about 9.30 this evening in the- upstairs portion of Mr J. ;M. Phillips' confectioner . shop. It had a gopd hold when discovered, and the place .was gutted, -and -of hi 3 furniture and
stock very little was saved. Mr Rico (confectioner), Mr Prebble (fruiterer), and ;Mr Hannah (boot, importer), had their stocks;damaged by water, while the upper portion of.Mr Rice's shop was also gutted. Mr .Phillips' furniture, stock, and shop : fittings w.gre insured for £4OO, aijd his ; household, furniture for £IOO, but his loss i will'be about £7OO over that amount. ;".'■' ASHBURTON, December 4. t . A new five-roomed house in Hampstoad, '.valued, at. £260, OAvned by Mrs Susannah -Tasker, and occupied by Mr J. Redding;ton, was completely, destiroyed by fire last .night.. The bo use was insured for £163 fill...the State office and the furniture for ; £75 in Norwich Union.
