AGAINST MONOPOLY.

A deputation of towns-people, headed by the Mayor, waited on Mr Reece, chairman of directors of the W'tstport-Stock-ton Coal Company to-night and urged that he place before his fellow-directors the question of keeping the company free from an agreement with the U.ci.S. Company or any other company, eo that' coal could be quoted f.o.b. Westport, and any .ship that came a'.ong could get. cargo. lli-a speakers deprecated a monopoly as against the interests of. the district, and' urged Mr Reeqe to do what he could in th? matter consfetenr with consideration of the best interests of the shareholders. In the course of his ivp'.y, Mr Reece pointed out that only one > hipping company wits visiting ail ports of the colony, and that must b:' taken into consideration. He expected that a large portion of his company's (.oul would be shipped outside the Dominion, but he would place the representations of the ♦rputation before the mreting of directors. • ■'■■
