DOMINION DAY.
THE PREMIER'S EXPLANATION,
Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, September 19.
Sir Joseph Ward (states that the Government do not suggest that the public holiday on Dominion Day should be in addition to the already lengthy list of annual ho]id;)vs. The Government are considering whether two or more holidays can be merged into on?, and observed on_ Dominion Day. A decision on this point, will be come to later. In any caso the public may rest assured that Dominion Day will not be celebrated hereafter as an additional holiday. Under these circumstances the Prcmisr" trusts that Paliv.r.rston and Dannevirke, the only towns that have no far decided not to observe the 26tJi inst. as a holiday, will favourably reconsider their decision. A public reception with a musical programme is b-?ing arranged to take place in the Town Hall on the evening of Dominion Day. The Education Board has circularised committees throughout the district suggesting that all schools co-operate in the celebration. GBEYMOUTH, September 19. At a mer-ting of tho Trades and Labour Council to-night it was decided to protest against Ihe proposal to make Dominion Day a. statutory public holiday.
