A Japanese fishing vessel was wrecked on Barrier Reef on August 3rd. 'lhe crew, comprising fifteen- Australian natives and Japanese-, took to four small boats. Two boats containing eight men in a bad condition wer-L> picked up on Tuesday The others are missing, and it is supposed that they have been drowned.

The. deck wiis all burned out, and the hull bulged on both sides,' but r-still watertight. Tha burning steamer had a strong list to port, and was flying signals of distress : "Want help." The SeydliU got close up, but it was impossible to board the FurUmatus. It wiis seen that all the boatis were missing, and though a sharp lookout was kept for several days, nothing was s-een of them. The captain of the Seydlitz: considers that the burning vessel is a great danger to navigation. It is in the direct track of vessels going, from Colombo to Fremantle, and it will probably float for a long time, as it ifi in a region of i-alni.?. The Fortuiiiitus was 34 days out from Calcutta to Melbourne with a huge ijuantity of general cargo. , SYDNEY, August 19. ' A cable message has been received announcing that the crew of the Foilunaius have, been picked up and landed at Mauritius. Received 0.36 a.m., August 20th. Tli'.' Fortunatus' cargo was valued at £IOO,OOO. All the leading marine offices are involved. She had at least 2000 tons of tea on board.
