PREFERENCE.
AUSTRALIA AND FIJI. ' Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, August 18. . In the Fiji " Times," of July 24th, the following signed by the Governor (Sir Evcrard im Thorn), appears on the subject of preference with Aixtvalia: " I think to well to state* for general information that negotiations between the Commonwealth Government and that of Fiji oa the subjectof an Australian duty on bananas are proceeding, but that ui far as I am aware, no- definite result has been attained. Certainly the- suggestion that there has beic<n or can be any question of ' preference' as between the- Commonwealth and Fiji, h entirely unfounded; bat if as a result of a mutual agreement between the two Governments, both decide to modify their dutks on certain foodstufi'j in the general interests and without- preference to any/ •particular place, a wide-retching benefit will, it is believed, have been attained.
