FIRE PREVENTION.

TTMARU'S WATER SUPPLY. STATEMENT BY THE MAYOR. The Mayor, interviewed by a "Herald" reporter yesterday, said he did not feel inclined to attach much importance to the litter of the captain of the Fire Brigade in that morning's issue. Mr Campbell had made an attack upon the water-supply before, and a committee of the Council, which included some former members of the Brigade, had tested the supply and found a good pressure where Mr Campbell said there was none. Mr Campbell wrote very much . at large about the smallness of the mains, 'i'iie Council had l>:en, and were at the present time, improving the reticulation, and another order for £IOOO worth of pipes had been authorised. . The water-supply was never in better condition, and such statements as had been penned by Mr Campbell were unjustifiable. Thi« was especially the case with regard to alleged defective and" burled fiie-plugs. unless the whole facts were told, and this had not been done. The report of an independentcommittee should have more weight than a complaint which seemed to be directed moiv; against an officer of the Council than against the fire appliances, and the committee had reported favourably- on the tests they had made. Mr P. Campbell desires to correct- a, slip of the pen in his letter published yesterday. A passage referring to a trial at. the Convent-rtatcd that the water "just reached tin lower part of the r-acond storv." This should have read, "justreached the. lower part of the roof of the resond story."
