COMMERCIAL FACILITIES

C. V. C. A. NKW STORKS. MeeMs K. Hall and Sons have just begun llie erection of a i:i:«<e building <m ileatoit s;re.t for the Canternuty l''annoi's Co-op-erative? Ae;sociafion. ( for some mouths pa«l a contractor. Mr Monahan. has had a, numerous staff ami lots of horses and drays at work on a big excavation, and the re suit. is a hole in which the greater part of the lower .storey of the new store will be sunk. I lie excavation conu-s close up to the Healoii M-iwl front, but is 80ft back from Stafford street; a roadway is left on the south .side, within the Association's section, and a vard 75ft wide will be loft on the railway hide. 'I he lower storey will be 179 by 150kand 17tt high, the upper floor a trifle larger the walls being thinner, and 13ft, liigh. The lower florey will have concrete walls Uft thick, with piers added to bear the girders for the upper floor. Betwe-en the concrete walls and the clay will be put 8 inches of rubble, at the bottom of which, sunk beneath the level of the bottom of the concrete, so as to drain it, will be a drain, of socketed, bur not cemented stoneware pipes. The iipp:r storey walls will be of 14 inch brickwork, topped by a concrete cornice. The lower floor will be of concrete 5 inches thick, and from this floor will rise 143 iron i-t"r<?y-posts of H section, each resting on a slab of Milestone 2git square, and th:<; on a block of concrete sft square. The storey-posts ivill cany ironhark girders 16 x 12 inches, 12ft apart, and upon these will rest the floor joists 15 x 4. only 8 inches apart, except beneath the upper floor storey where the joists will be 15 x 9's. From the upper floor will rice 48 H section storey posts to carry the roof, these being lighter posts than tho:e below. 111? roof will be of the saw-tooth pattern, with nine "teeth" 10ft high, fully glazed on the perpendicular south face. For lighting the lower floor 135 ship's deck prisms will be inserted in the upper floor, and windows are provided where there is no clay bank in the way. Access to the stores will be provided by two railway tracks connected at the back by a. crr.esline and turn tables, and by numerous doors in the Heaton street, yard, and side road walls. The upper doors will be fitted with crams for loading and unloading from the yard. The plans provide for a very substantial building, and its size will make the upper storey a valuable one for the showing of wool. The' builders' contract price is: £8179, and the Association have provided the iron posts, cement, and drain-pipes, about £2OOO worth altogether. The builders have eight months in which to complete the job. The contractors for the excavation were fortunate in having dry weather from start to finish for their work. Messrs Hall and Son have been unlucky in coming en the 'ground after a rain, which has made a vile puddle of t-li-s. clay surface. To make matters worse for them, on starting the foundation trench on the Stafford street i-.ide they have .'truck a spring of water that threatens* to become troublesome, by making their work dirty and sloppy. This water is supposed to he a percolation from th» horse trough at the Commercial Hotel, which is always flowing over into a pitched channel, and tluse channels are well known to b? anything but water-tight.
