COLLISION OFF EUREKA. PASSENGER STEAMER FOUNDER*. GREAT LOSS OF LIFE. Press Association-By Telegraph-Copyright Received- 11.28 p.m., July 23vd. LONDON, July 23. Reuters Han' Francisco correspondent states that the small steamer, Sim Pedro, laden with lumber, collided 'at midnight on Saturday off Eureka during a heavy fog'with the steamer Columbia, 27ft) tons, carrying numerous San Francisco passengers. The San I\'dro shuck the Ener's port bow, tearing an immense hole. The Columbia's pass'engenj hurried on deck where a wild panic ensued. The Columbia sank in live minutes. A life raft was launched and saved a. few, and eight were saved by clinging to the San Pedro. Lloyd's states, that. 100 persons/ were drowned, and 2CO saved by a passing steamer. Other accounts give the number lost, at 150, including the Columbia's caplain.. One story slates that every woman perished.
TOTAL LOSS OF A SCOW. FOUR MEN DROWNED. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, .July 23. A telegram from Tairua. states that a messenger from Ohui has just ridden over and reported that- the scow- Surprise went ashore on the rocks about a mile- from] t'li-? north -end of Olmi bench, and iii a total wreck. The captain, mate and two seamen are supposed to be drowned. A fifth hand got ashore.. and found his Avay to Ohui, where be- is being looked after by Mr James McGregor. He is badly' knocked about, and rambles a little in his talk, but is expected to be well in a- day or -two. His name is Harry Jackson. .From what can be. gathered from Jacksoil's account' the- scow dragged her anchors right from Slipper Island, and went .afilioj'e on the coast early on Sunday morning.
