BOXING CHAMPIONSHIP.
SQUIRES V. BURNS. A cablegram to the "Sydney Morning Herald," dated London, r 4th July, gives the result of the boxing contest for the heavy-weight championship between W. Squires, of New South Wales, and T. Burns, of America, which took place on 4th inst., at San Francisco. James J. Jeffries, the retired champion, acted as referee. Burns knocked out Squires in one round. A further message from the ringside stated:—Squires proved the biggest failure as a championship candidate that ever entered a ring* here. He had no defence from Burns, and was knocked out in less than a minute's fighting. At the sound of the gong Burns retreated around the ring. Squires . clinched. Burns drew Squire's fire, and then floored him with a right-temple hit. Squires was clearly rattled, and rose with a lump between the ear and the eve the size of a pigeon's egg. Squires then went at Burns in a shaky manner, and forced him on the platform, getting in some body punches and a lefthander on the side of the face. Burns was cool, but Squires was suffering from the knock-down blow. Burns' watched his chance, and landed a snapping blow. Squires went to the boards again but got up. He reeled, ducking imaginary blows', and trying to clinch an imaginary opponent. Burns measured him. and sent him down and "out" with a right-hander on the chin. Squires rested on his back, his head raised, and eyelids trembling. Jeffries counted him out. Further details from New York stated that when the fight commenced the men came together quickly. Squires forced Burns around, tin latter backing away. Thev clinched ,and both tried to punch in the clinches and failed. Burns felled Squires with a right on the jaw. Squires rose immediatelv -and went in. scormg on the bodv with his right. They clinched an-ain and worked across* the floor. Squires laid his right on Burns's body, and his left on his ear. Then Bums lauded bis right on Squires's lftnd, and followed it with another, knocking: tV Australian down. Squires rcss, but lie was knocked down again.
