ATHLETICS

SOUTH CANTERBURY HARRIERS.

The members of the above Club held a very successful outing yesterday, when they were the guests on kind .invitation of Mr Wm. Penrose, Wai-iti road. Judging by the large attendances lately the remainder of the syllabus' invitations promises well. Walsh and C. Maltlius were dispatched with the bags, and the pack followed shortly after. An excellent course was picked out, striking out from Wai-iti road to Otipua road into grand country, through the quarry and Mr . BoyleYs property. While in the vicinity of the quarry tlis Trinity pack was caught sight of, but they were too far away to exchange cheers. From the quarry tlib pack' were taken northward coming out by the Wai-iti store. Turning homewards across some fine country the pack doubled on to Morgan's road, struck offl to the quarry again and picked up the outward trail near the Athletic grounds. R,ight through the running warvery brisk, the country mostly thns:in charge of the bags being in a m?a«mv responsible for this-. In the sprint homo Kuowles, Mansford, and. Pan Ion: showed up well. This trio should have no difficulty in being picked for t ; lie inter-Club teams' race. After a mucli-needed brushup', delicious refreshments were dispensed by Mrs Penrose', and proved not the least' important feature 'of the afternoon's sport. Captain Maltlius returned thanks to Mr and Mrs Penrose for their efforts to help along the premier winter sport, and three hearty cheers were then given by members. Mr Penrose in acknowledging tho compliment wished the S.S.H. continued prosperity. A humorous sketch by Mr Fra ser and further cheers brought to a close one of the most successful outings yet held.

TRINITY HARRIERS. ;

Yesterday afternoon, in -weather which was in every way suitable for cross-coun-try sport, the Trinity Harrier Club got oft' another of this season's outings. Following up ;ths good turnout of the Club's members, the attendance on this occasion was equal to that of any of the previous ones. Tlio pack met at 'the residence of Captain Tait, Elizabeth street, for whose kmdnes-s they are, oh this and past occasions, greatly indebted. Sharp to time, J. MeOahon. and A. G. Tait were dispatched witA the paper. Taking into account that both were practically new to the game this season, -their conduct with the bags', and the good discretion they exercised in their choice of country, reflected much credit upon them. Their trail led from the rendezvous via Le Cren street and Woodlands road to Otipua roarl, from whence they took to the precincts- of the quarry. Some fast going had been indulged in till the latter place was reached, but here their progress • was marred by some of the pack being rather daring in their attempts to - cross a creek. Their condition was far from pleasant, not a few having experienced some little hardship. The homeward. journey was then commenced, which took along Fairview road and Otipua, road, along by the Athletic grounds, through Mr Tumisay's property,

lo Pearson street. About a quarter of a/ mile from home the usual sprint took place, this week C. Peters, D. F. Glanville and W. Tait shoving best •■form. All seemed glad on arrival home, and after partaking of the good things provided by Mrs and Miss Tait, the captain returned the usual complimentary remarks. The Club were favoured with the companionship yesterday afternoon of two of their late captains; - who are at present on holiday in Timaru. It has been deoided that a paper clinse- shall take placevat an early date.
