WHITE WORKERS IN QUEENSLAND.
Sir.—A[av I tra'v# a little space in your well-read paper to refute Mr James Chappie's assertion that no white man con work in the sugar-cane fields of Queensland. It is an assertion that is worthy of the ".stinking fish " party of Australia. Mr Cliapple claims to have had six years experience hi Xorih Queei)vlaiul but l>\ the way he writes ore would think that he was never there; bub had got hw information from the unreliable pro-iugger Pre®.. I hav-a had 28 years' experience in North Queensland and know everv pliase of tho sugar question. As a matter of fact, not onlv can the. white man wovk in thH sugar field but he does work there r at the present time there are very few Kanalcaa employed in the fields or in anv way with the industry. They have breu'deported and no more are allowed to come to Queensland and the sugar industry was never so prosperous before as 'tis "to-day. When the Kanakas were cmployed mill niter mill shut down; now that- tlio white man is employed there some mills are working again. "nw does Mr Ch.niplp account for this? The challenge of Mr William Hamilton. M.L.A. (n "cut. cane with any Kanaka, was no tflaprTash. As a matter of fact you would oi'lv have to remnrk that- the Kanaka, is the lie! ter cutter, and vou would have 100 men ru:-h you to bet you any amount vou like, to prove who is and who Is not: T have tniowii manv of these clialVnges offered bv the white men but T have never known any of the pro-nigger crowd to accept. I have always held that what the black man can do the white man can do better. —T am, etc., OH AS. PEARCE. Waimate, 10th July.
