A lire broke- out on Saturday on the German-Australian .steamer' Varzin, which was loading for the Continent at Woolloomooloo Ray, and was only extinguished by Hooding the vessel. THE MEDIC TO RE DOCKED. LONDON, June' 18. The steamer Medic lias arrived at Liverpool. She has only a slight'crack above' the water line. The vessel will be dry docked for examination.

The Medic collided oif the South Foreland with . the petroleum tank steamer Tlirbo, in a fog. The Turbo was seriously' damaged and reached the harbour. A crack twenty feet long was made in tlie Medic's bow above the water, but sue continued her voyage. THE KIA OKA WRECK; Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, June 19. Inspector Cullcm has received a telegram from Constable McCarthy, at Kawhia, who estimates that eight persons were drowmd in the. wreck of the Kia Ora. So far no. bodies have been recovered. It has been decided to hold an enquiry into the wreck of (lie Kia Ora in Auckland. It was thought at first that it would bib held in Isew Plymouth, but as most of the. witnesses are here it has been decided to hold it hers-. The date is not yet fixed. NAUTICAL ENQUIRY. . WELLINGTON, Juno 19. An enquiry was held to-day concerning the stranding of the steamer Huia on Long Point, Kapiti Island, while on the trip from Wanganui to Wellington. The Court found that -Captain Dowell did not take sufficient precautionary measures to ascertain his position when approaching Kapiti. The. Court took into consideration his excellent- record during the thirty years lie- had held a master's certificate, but thought he should hz> censured for hh want of care on this occasion, and be ordered to pay the costs of the inquiry.
