Hi® Agricultural correspondent of the London " Standai d " wmes—The linger and toe disease is again brought to our notice by a recent report detailing some experiments which have been carried out in Staffordshire and Shropshire under the auspices of the former county council. Hore it is stated • th;tt the application, of . ground lime and basic slag, is a preventive. The experiments were carried out on a light sandy loam which is very liable to the disease, 'llie field was manured at tire rata of scwt. per. acre with the following—scwt. of dissolved'bone, 2cwt. of superphosphate, lcwt. of sulphate of potash, and J,-c\vt. of sulphate ot ammonia. On one part of the field ground lime was applied at the rate of haif a ton per acie, and on another basic .slag at the rate ;bf sc\vt. per acre. The effect of the. latter is not- stated, but tha ground lime proved most efficacious. When liming for this disease, we should point out, it is not enough to take lump lime and allow it to shake on the land in heaps before being distribute:!. If good results are to-be obtained it must be fmlily ground, not J;t>o tine, and evenly distributed and ploughed in. One cannot expect that slaked lime will have, any effect on the fungus spores, hence the importance of unslaked lime ground sufficiently small to malie even distribution an easy matter. Tuiigi were once thought of small importance: now, however, "no branrli of botany receives more attention." Recent research has not only ."hown the overwhelming numbers of fungi, fifty thousand fonns having already been described and recorded, but hAs proved certain facts, among others iJiat fungal roots excrete acids, mainly oxalic acid, to a much greater extent than the roots of the higher plants^. Even in the well-searched British isle-? new species of fungi a.re found evenyear. Moreover, " fungolomically." an immense amount of work stilli remains to be done. Here, therefore-, is a not overworked field for the naturalist. I Chamberlain's Cough Kennedy is good for any member of the family. It cures coughs, of all kinds.
