Tanners Ark, the " barrel boat " which left- Sumner on June 4th for Timaru, and wast reported to be provisioned for a three days voyage only, arrived here about 11.oJ yesterday morning, and the anxiety concerning the. safetv of her crew of six. and any fears that they would be found m a starve*! condition, were soon allayed, when in became knonn that there bad been n* scarcity of food. The ark was sighted off Timaru. and shortly afterwards Captain Clarkson went out- in the Elsie Evans and towed it in. A good many people collected on-the Main wharf expecting to hear that the men were suffering from th. eSects of starvation, but it soon became known that the crew were in good health—the I>ist of the provisions having been consumed on arrival at Timaru. The ark was anchored about the middia of the harbour. Captain Tanner reported that the voyage from Sumner had not resulted in any inconvenience to any of the CT j-*' Tbfrvtefb Sumner at 11 a.m. on June 4th. and"were out bf right of Sumner by night, but owing to lack of wind', they anchored. Calms prevailed again on Wednesday and Thursday, and a slight breeze which sprang up on Friday carried them as far as Akaroa. After spending Saturday in vain ~ attempts to attract attention by signalling. they were still in sight of the lighthouse on Sunday. By Monday night they managed to get as far as Ashburton. but the currents "carried them back thirty mihs during the .'night. On Tuesday they worked back .to Ashburton. but from that day until Thuisdav heavy'fogs wrre nut with. They continued to creep down the coast steadily, and the. lights of Timaru were picket! up yesterday before daybreak. During the voyage they spared nothing, every man having as mucli as he wanted, raid when Timaru w.r; sighted thev finished off everything remaining in the- shape of provision. There was nothing event fid about the voyage—it \vas simply monotonous. Captain Tanner war, acconipanied to Timaru by Messrs A. Edwards and J. Bean, who joined him merely for the run to TimarU. and Messrs S. Hudson, C. Davis, and W. Wilson, who wi!l accompany him on his future travels. T)i: ark will be at Timaru for about; a. week.
