ATHLETICS

SOUTH CANTERBURY HARRIERS. The weekly run of the South Canterbury Harriers took place yesterday from the -residence of Mr J.. P. Kalaugher, Winchester. The hare% G. Mansford and R. Knowles, laid'a good, though treacherous, trail through streams and bogs. One member got out of his depth in one oithe streams but succeeded in swimming out and escaped -with nothing -worse than a ducking. After a very enjoyable run. teawas partaken of, and a pleasant time was spent in harmony: Musical items were given by Messrs Webb, Aylen, Smith, and Pratt. The. captain (Mr Malthus) then thanked Mr Kalaugher and the ladies for their kindness in entertaining the South Canterbury Harriers. Mr Kalaugher had given them a really good _ time and the country was some of. the best for harrier running. Mr. Kalaugher, in reply, said that it gave him great pleasure to help along such a fine sport, and he hoped that lie would have the opportunity to help them again on'a future occasion. After cheera the Harriers left for home, having had a very enjoyable time.

TRINITY HARRIERS. Yesterday afternoon the Trinity Harrier Club got offi another of ■their crosscountry runs. The weather was dull, and the country was greasy in parts; the going was', naturally, trying on the runners, but. the outing seemed not 'to lose interest, for the attendance;' -was quite. on a par with any of its predecessors. That the hares were not in any way daunted as to weather conditions, apparent on the long distance they led their pack, the' journey covered being close ort ten miles. As strong and experienced paperlayers this was not surprising, for Gould and 'Fisher are famed for long distances: Sharp to time a start was made from the Caroline" Bay tea-rooms, the ouhvord journey leading by Hewling and Edward streets, on to Wai-iti road, from whence' their track took aciwiv by the Athletic, grounds to the quarry. In and near the precincts of the latter place the country was very suitable for some' rather interesting and amusing incidents—especially to those who were fortunate enough to remain on their feet. ; Keeping to the north side of the quarry, recourse was taken to a, few paddocks, which bronfht the pack back on to Wai-iti road. The m°inbers\ as on hist day's indulged in a sprint, Hamilton, Olanville (2), and Brake beincr finvt to rrac.h . Jiovop,.
