FOOTBALL

A GRUMBLE FROM WESTPORT

Per Press Association.

' WESTPORT, May 28.

Dennehy, who is chosen as emergency in the football team to represent the South Island is a member of a Westporfc club affiliated to the Buller Rugby Union which has no connection with Westland or the Westland • Union, the Buller county being in the Nelson and not- in the Westland province. It is a matter of constant complaint in this district that. Westport- and tha Wtstporfr colliers are treated in Press Association telegrams as beingr.in Westland instead of as they are in Nelson province. At a meeting of the Buller Rugby Union management committee tonight a telegram was received from Auckland accepting' Buller's ■ challenge for the Ranfurly Shield, the match to take place frt Auckland on July 15th. The Marlborough Union. , also wired accepting Bulger's challenge for the Seddon Shield, and fixed a match for 20th July. The; committee learned with surprise that Dennehy had been picked merely as an emergency, for the South Island team and decided to voice it 3 most emphatic protest, seeing that Dennehy was a member of the South Island team last year and vide Press reports earned special distinction for ' his p T ay. The ■ committee * considered that Psnnehy was showing improved fo;rm this year and utterly failed to understaJid the action of the selectors in relegating him to the place of emergency.

THE CANTERBURY UNIOX

CHRISTCHURCH, May 28.

At a meeting- of the commitee of the Canterbury Rugby; Union to-night this ?ectetary reported that D. McGregor, one of tha Canterbury nominees for the North v. South Island match, had Tefused to sign the declaration re professional team tc tour England.

Complaints were received as to the conduct of spectators at recent footbal' matches in encroaching on the grounds, and the committee decided to take strong measures to put a stop to the trouble. THE RUGBY UNION. A meeting of the management committee of the S.C. Rugby Union was held on Mon day- evening, when there were present Messrs F. C. Watson (Chairman), W. Carlton, W. Maben, C. F_'Collins, and W. A. Hurdley (Hon. Sec.). On the motion of Mr Carlton, the secretary was instructed to call tenders foi medals for the winning teams in the seven-a-side tournament, seven to be of gold, seven silver with gold monogram, anc seven plain silver. A request from the Zingari Football C'lul: for permission for their Saturday team U play a match with a Kensington team waf granted.

D. Allen. W. Houlihan and S. Burn' then appeared to answer a charge of using insulting language to the caretaker of tlu Athletic Grounds on May 16th. Evidence was given by the caretaker that Shaw anc Allen 'spoka to him in a very abusive man ner. but he "was not sure about Houlihan. The threa men admitted refusing to paj for admission and that they climbed ovei the fence, but denied using any bad lan guage. It was decided to suspend Houlihai until June 30th, 1907, and Allen and Burn: until September 20th, 1907, and during the terms of their suspension, the men be warned off all grounds under the jnrisdictioi of the Union.

i A letter was read from the X.Z. Rugby Union stating that £2OO had been put asidt for distribution -to the various unions foi the encouragement of school football, anc that applications for grants would be received up to June 15th. Mr Collins pointec out that as the S.C. district was a scatterei one, and the chief deterrent to school foot b-dl was the expense of travelling, a gran; of at least £2O would be necessary to pro vide each school with a football and : contribution to the travelling expenses. Ht proposed that the secretary should inforn the Union of these circumstances, and tlii: was carried.

The secretary stated that the net receipt: from the recent tournament amounted t< about £25, and members considered thi: v.-ry satisfactory. The Committee then rose.
