In fact, many natives are soliciting employment which cannot be found for theni, and a moderate estimate places the surplus at tliree thousand. Native labour, generally speaking, is plentiful 'after sowing- time and- until about May, when an exodus begins-' of the " boys" working in the mines during the South African summer. ' Various 'special reasons are suggested for the. present influx, which is larger than usual. A troop of "boys" who were recently'trekkinp; towards the Rand, admitted when questioned, that many of them had not left' their kraals since the Trar.
