FOOTBALL

THE STAR CLUB. A new epoch in the history of the Star football Club was marked Lust, evening, when the recently acquired Club rooms were ojjened by the patron of the Club, Mr R, H. Rholcs. The Club was formed in tlio early '9o'a, the first president being Mr Frank Smith, who is now a lifenifinbcr of the Club. The social room was taxed to its utmost for the opening ceremony, about. 100 members and friends being present. Mr P. C. Watson, president of the club, presided, and seated on his right was Mr R. H. Rhodes, patron, and on his left, Mr P. Smith, first president -of the club, representatives of the Rugby Union and of the various football clubs being also present. Mr Watson expressed great pleasure at seeing so many present on such an important occasion. He introduced the club patron, Mr Pv. H. Rhodes to the meeting, and then read - a balance-sheet showing receipts amounting to £l5O, including receipts from sales of debentures £100," and ■liabilities amounting to £l6B, of which the chief items were billiard table 85 guineas and piano 43- guineas, leaving a deficit of £lB. He invited all who wished to do so, to become members of the club, and reminded members that the debent-ure-list had not been closed.

Mr R. H. Rhodes said he was proud at being asked to open the club's rooms. The formation of a social club of this kind Was, he was sure, a departure in the interests not only of the Star club, but of all football in South Canterbury . (hear, hear). The fact that the club possessed such rooms was enough to encourage members; to strive to still further improve the ciub's reputation, and to give a good tone to- it, so that the younger members as they.were enrolled would be proud'to emulate the .actions of the older ones. He had now for a good many years been patron of the club, and during that time had always been interested in their welfare, and proud of their achievements, and he hoped to see the walls -of the socialroom adorned with many more 'photos of team's which had successfully striven to win, the game for '•' Star." The thanks of the club were, he thought,- Hue to the Press for the maimer in which the games had been reported, so that readers were abJe to follow the play as though Witnessing it. But especially were the thanks of every member due to the committee who bad, worked so hard'to obtain and fit up social rooms. He was quite -certain that a social dub was the best possible menus of keeping young men together and' out of harm. (Hear, hear). He had , much pleasure in declaring the Star Football Club's roams duly opened i (loud and continued applause). ■'■>■. The patron and president then proceeded to '• play the opening game of billiards, after which a social, evening of a v-eiy pleasant nature was spent by all. There are four rooms for the use of the Club on the first floor of the block erected by Messrs Hunt and Werry on the comer of George and Sophia streets. The rooms are in point of comfort and convenience well suited for social purposes. 0n ; reaching the head of the stairway, the visitors' ey« is caught by a nicely finished doorway, upon which the words "Star Football Club—for members" picked out in black, stand out' boldly agaimvb the lighter tints of the doorway, the appearance of which is greatly improved by t-lw addition of a- 'fancy fanlight. The door opens into : the billiard room, 25 feet by 20 feet, the -central portion of which is taken up by a first quality billiard table by Messrs Lutjohann and Co., of Christchurch. One corner is occupied by - a fireplace, with a very neatly carved mantelpiece in stained wood, while a dias about six inches high runs round three sides of the room. Handsomely upholstered seats •ire placed on this, and their raised position affords an excellent iview' of play in progress. Above the fireplace is a noticebeard, and a framed membership list, and to. the left of this "a cue-rack of the most approved pattern is set up. Next to the billiard room is thfj social room, 25 feet by 14 feet, well' furnished with a score of neat chairs and two or three upholstered (seats. 'An excellent Werner piano shows that good provision has been made for the musical tastes of members. The walls are relieved with a number of photographs of teams, etc., one of the president, Mr F. C. Watson, being; hung in a prominent position. The Avinclows, which overlook George street, are curtained with neat and heavy material, while the lower panes have been frosted and "Star Foocball Ulub Rooms " inscribed thereon. Provision is made for committee 'and ' secretary in the shape of a room, 12 feet by 12 feet, adjoining the billiard room, and this may also be used as a card room. The furnitnre of this apartment consists of a neat desk, fitted with drawers and pigeon holes, several chairs, and half a dozen card tables, and a -fireplace is- also fitted in. 'A bathroom and lavatory, fitted with the latest sanitary, appliances, completes the suite. The walls- throughout are of plaster, distempered in. a creain-tint, and the ceilings are of pressed steel of a very neat pattern. The floors of all the' rooms are covered with linoleum, and the lighting arrangements, for both day and night are excellent. With the exception of . the. chairs, all the furniture has been made- by the'club-members, who have good reason to be proud of their handiwork. The cost of furnishing, billiard table, otc, in all amounting to about £2OO, has been borne by members, debentures having been issued for the purpose.- The rooms have be.en build by Messrs Hunt and Werry; the painting carried out by Mr J. Craigie, the plumbing and gas fitting by Mr J. Hitch, while the sign-writing is the work of Mr' J. Dephoff. The architect, was Mr W. Panton.
