" Canada " means " a collection of huts " in the native Indian language. Newfoundland' was the first British Colony and • the first- bit of the American continent taken possession of by the British. It's name, New-found-land, speaks for itself. "Australia" means "land of the south."Van Dieman's Land " was named after a Dutch discoverer, and that name was changed to "Tasmania," after Tasmnn, another Dutch navigator. New Zealand was first discovered by Tasman and be named it after the province of Zealand, in Holland. Captain Cook was the first European to set foot on tho islands. " Natal " was so named by a Portuguese sailor \'asco de Gam a. hsffinse. he sighted the land on Christinas day.
