A GAS QUESTION.

To the Editor of the " Timaru Herald."

Sir,—Some little time ago I a-ked you or -some of your readers if you could tell why the gas in some places gives very fair light when used witli an ordinary open burner, while in smother town no satisfactory light can be obtained without using a mantle and chimney. A striking example of the latter kind of gas is shown by a lamp placed above tliu gate at the Police Station of the town in question, where an ordinary burner show-.; a light of about half a candle power. Is the quality of the gas inferior? A street lamp a few chains away with a mantle shows a good light. Information on the point will oblige. I am, etc.. CONSUMER.
