The five-year-old son of Mi'.George Horwood was drowned in the river ai.Huntly. 'He was playing with another boy named jolin Kelly in a canoe', which capsized, and both boys were thrown into the river. ]£elly got ashore without giving the alarm until ha reached home. The river was dragged, but . when the body was found life' was extinct.

The, evidence showed that deceased had been,, suffering from melancholia, and lis was drdered by his medical adviser to go for a change. He was in a comfortable financial position. _ lhe jury returned a verdict that Francis Day died from a wound self-inflicted wlnle suffering from melancholia. Day leaves a widow and seven children.

DUNEDIN, May 20. A party of motorists had a very unpleasant experience on Sunday. Mr i> : . W Bamfield and his wife and two, sons, with ilr Ferminoer acting as cliaffeur, were proceeding in Mr Bamfield's motor car from Dunedin to Waitati.. About a. quarter of a mile past the junction, the fiii W as suddenly bombarded with a shower of stones and earth, evidently thrown down on the party by someone concealed on the bank above the road. One clod of earth struck Mr Bainfield on the temple with great force breaking his spectacles and completely dazing him. His sons and the chnffeur. (the latter rather badly cut), rushed to the. roadside fence and saw three lads of about sixteen to eighteen years of age running away. Chase was given but eventually they got away. The matter has been put m the hands of the police.
