The adjourned ease- against Margaret McCauliife, proprietress of the Shamrock boarding-house, charged with unlawfully selling- liquor on April Ist was begun this afternoon and concluded to-night. Mr Solomon, of Dunedin, appeared for the defence.

Evidence was given by two witnesses (Hollmnn and Lawson), who had previously absconded and were brought back under arrest , as to the sale of whisky to them and another person on the date stated.

Under cross-examination witnesses stated that while they were in the cells awaiting the hearing of another charge preferred against them, they told the police of the sale of liquor to them on April Ist and were asked by the police to visit the Shamrock and invite accused to sell them liquor again. They accordingly visited the house, but could only purchase soft drinks.

Two other witnesses and accused denied the sale. Defendant admitted that she had been convicted in August, 1905, of •the unlawful sale of liquor, but said she was not guilty. Decision was reserved.
