THE LONDON MARKET

All tlireequarter scraped was' withdrawn. The Peninsular and Oriental Company nas declared a dividend of 7 per cent. on. deferred shares.

THE WHEAT MARKET

LONDON, May 19.

The. wheat market is very firm in view of the increasing probability .of short crops, both in Europe and America. The American and Canadian crops are estimated to be 25,000,000 quarters below the 1906 yield, and those of Europe 20,000,000 quarters below. Sales of ten cargoes of Australian wheat are reported at prices ranging from 33s to 33s 6d.

The American wheat markets are rather active, but there is little excitement. Prices have slumped under the favourable weather at Home and abroad.

HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT

The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable message from the High Commissioner, dated London, Mav 18th:

Mutton—The market is quiet, and there is a poor local demand, except for prime light weights, of which a gre ait scarcity exists. Canterbury mutton, 4d; North Island, 3|d. A large supply of ewes is on the market, averaging 2|d. River Plats mutton is in large supply, and is being strongly pushed for sale. The average price of this mutton is S^d. Lamb—There is a. good demand for all lamb, with more enquiry for forward delivery. Canterbury brands, s^d; other s^l.' Beef —Stocks of New Zealand beef on hand are light, and the market is firm. Present- quotations are: 3|d and for hind and forequarters respectively. Butter—The market is steady for fine finality, but lifeless for ordinary classes. Siberian supplies are increasing and are quoted at 90s. The average price for choice New Zealand butter is 995. and for Danish 105s.

Cheese—The market is firm, and there is a good demand for New Zealand cheese at 66s for white and 64s for colored small. The shipment of Canadian cheese ha« bsen delayed on account of the strike.

Hemp—The' market is quiet, with only a small business doing. Good to fair grade on spot is quoted at £35 and May-July shipments at £34; fair grade on spot, £3O 16s.

Cocksfoot seed—The market is quiet but firm, and there is no pressure to .sell; 171b bright dressed feed is quoted at 545. Wheat—The wheat market- is very much stronger. Oats are firm, with a hardening tendency, and peas firm, but the demand is only moderate.

Kauri gum—The market is rather quiet, owing to a poor demand. The following are current quotations : Ordinary to fair three-quarter scraped. 1455; fair half scraped, 85s: brown fair half threequarter scraped. 81s; pickings, common to good, 45? ; bush fair to good wale and amber scraped. 150s per cwt. r I lis stock on hand is 1091 tons.
