OBITUARY.

HON. LANCELOT WALKER

The- death is announced to-day of the Hon. Lancelot Walker, M.L.C., owner of Mount Four Peaks Station, at the age of 78. The deceased was one of the tarly runholders of South Canterbury, and like Messrs Tripp and Acland, his neighbours on the north, was one of, the very few

early holders to continue in possession. Originally, we believe, Four Peaks Station was taken up by Walker Bros.—deceased and a younger brother -who died many years ago—and a relative, Captain C!ogstoun, became a partner. The run at first comprised a block of country behind Four Peaks, but- this -was separated to form the Clayton run. The homestead, situated near the foot of one of the spur* of Four Peaks, and on the north branch of the Hae-hae-te-moana, was early made

a comfortable home, where the deceased

paid great, attention to a well-managed < garden and orchard. Mr Walker was a member of an old and distinguished famiiy at Home, and he well maintained its highest traditions. He had a tine presence and a cultivated manner, and was chosen as one of the few New Zealanders to accompany the Duke of Edinburgh over a portion of his colonial tour. Mr Walker took little or no part in local affairs, but he sat as a member of the old Provincin* Council of Canterbury; was elected to th« House of Representatives .for Akaroa. in 1365, and for Ashley in 1866, was called to the Upper House in JSS.S. and his de case makes another gap in the racks of those who were appointed for life. Mi Walker was never married. For many years past he has lived a retired life with his books and his garden, and for a good while past he has been an invalid. Hi-

remains- are to be interred on Wednesday

in the burial ground attached to the little church in Pleasant Valley, within sight ol

the. home where he had spent about half centurv.
