THE WOOL SALES.
Copyright—May 17th, 1.3 p.m. LONDON, May 16. The wool sales have closed at prices the highest of the series. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company have received the following cable from their London office-: The wool sales close at the level of last series, except about 5 per cent, decline on the following:— Crossbred lambs, scoured inferior merino, coarse scoured crossbred, coarse crossbred slipe, medium greasy crossbred, medium crossbred slipe, iinJ. medium scoured crossbred.

The following were the average prices realized for the fleece portions of the clips named—Richmond 9fdi, Kawarau 10|d, Poporangi llfd. Merinos, met a strong' demand throughout. AH medium best close 5 per cent, above March rates ; short fanlties barelv maintained March rates; crossbreds fully recovered the opening decline, and all classes are now fully equal to March rates: goo'd merino lambs advanced par ■•to 5 per cent. ; faulty declined 5 per cent. ; crossbreds declined! id. The Bradford market is very firm; business is limited; common 60's 26id, super 27-jd. THE "WHEAT BOOM. Copyright—May 17th, 10.20 p.m. LONDON. May 17. The wheat markets are very strong in sympathy with the American and owingto the continued bad crop report* from the principal European countries. The high prices' are checking business. Th? volnm? of business is immense, a few of the tending firms alone taking seven million bushels. The marfcp£ closed unsettled, and prices of top wh?at jumped 4 cents. New York trading is active, but at the close was unsettled, and part of the advance was lost.
