THE RINK STABLES.

The new livery stable in Stafford Street North, which is being buiit for Messrs Hay and Elworthy is now approaching completion. The stable when finished will be one of the largest and' best equipped in the colony. It has now been under construction for four months, and the contractors, Messrs Hunt and Werry, will soon havo the work out of their hands. The stable is- situate on the east, side of Stafford Street, north of King's Stables, and is a commodious building 112 feet deep by 96ft wide bbuiit on the usmal lines of stable construction. It h built throughout of brick with walls 26ft in height,,,the iron roof rising to a height of 41 feet.' A good deal of excavation was necessary and a concrete retainirig wall forms the back wall of the building. T,he stable stands about 100 ft from the street, frontage, and the main door opens on to a central portion 38ft x 112 ft, for the accommodation of vehicles: On the right of the entrance are ladies' and men's waiting rooms and lavatories, fitted up with the latest sanitary appliances, and on the, second storey is a room foil the stable attendants. On the left \there is a commodious harness room, and above it another men's room, which will be connected with the On© on the right by an overhead bridge: • Ninety-one stalls, and horse stands are provided, the former Bft by 6ft, and the latter Bft by 3fi 6in. There are also' sevenloose boxes, lift pin by 6ft 6in, and these with the stalls and stands are, fitted with iron feed and water boxes; feed* is stored in bins above each box, and the water troughs are automatically filled. Loft accommodation for hay, straw,) etc., is provided on both sides of the stable, running the whole length and of a width of 30ft, In addition to the main building a coveredin vehicle stand will bes constructed, this to be of an area of 112 ft by 96ft. As only the floor space of the large central portion is brought, into use, a second floor will probably be erected with the lofts, and' this will form an emergency vehicle stand,; a lift being provided to raise traps and carriages from, thfe'ground; floor. The stable is being built by Messrs Hunt and Werry, to-, plansprepared/by Mr T. C. Mullions, and subcontracts have ,been let to Mr H. Hollow, for the woodwork, Mr.Nisbet for the plumbing, and Mr B. J. North for the painting. Mr H. A. Glennie has secured the lease of. what are to be known as the "Rink Stables," and he entered into possession., on Monday last. No expense has been spared in providing the most up-to-date stable fittings and plant, and, as; the losses has made every arrangement >for meeting the heeds of His clients', the stable should receive liberal patronage. The old wooden building known as King's Stables will be replaced by an up-to-date motor-garage 150 feet deep, and the remainder of the block to Strathallah Street "will be occupied,by >a three-storey building, to b°. used for business offices. These two buildings will be of brick, and the whole; should; form one ■of the finest blocks in Timaru. - ' . ;'
