TIMARU HIGH SCHOOL.

CONCERT AT ST. MARY'S. A very successful evening's entertainment was provided at b'c. fury's schoolroom last, evening by the pupils of the .'iimaru High Ssciiocl, assisted by several of Timarus vocali Vs. The programme was presented under the direction of Mr G. T. Palmer, and the proceeds weie in aid of the school magazine fund. There were between 400. and 500 present. The. programme openel with a piano solo, very tastefully played by Mr J. Mayer. Two pupils of the school. F. Fall-Jones (Dr Pendios) and J. Gillies (Mr Dalhousie) appeared in a dialogue emitted "The Heir-at-law," a minor jjar.t b.ing taken by D. Martin. The characters were well madeup, and the paits of the dashing young heir vnd his precise tutor were excellently sustained. Mr J. Houlker sang '.'When the stars are youncv' and was loudly applauded. Mr G.' ; TV Ta'mer was greeted, with an enthvViratic rece.-.t;on and his rendering of "Jerebim and I ijah," a recitation of surpassing humour, thoroughly deserved the encore which he received and he added -a, funny story. Miss Gambling rang "When the twilight dews," a song, composed by Mr Irvin Moore, and one of the most charming songs ever heard in Timaru. Miss Gambling's rendering of it was all'that could be desired, and in response to the continued applause. Miss Gambling- repeated the last verse. Two scenes from "Henry. TV." were presented by nine pupils of the Hifrh s-chrol- The prinripal were taken by H. W. Sams .as Falstaff, B. Warring as Bardolf and Prince Hal, G. MaMns as Justice Silence p.nd Pains, and J. Gillies as Justice Shallow. Both scenes went off without a hi'ch, W. Samp playing a difficult part with confidence and success, and the other parts were also well played. F. HallJones W. Simmers, G. Valentine, K. Tennent and A. Hardcastle were a complete success in their of the ragged army Mr Andrews then sang "The Gladiator"'. and responded, to a well-earned encore. Miss MoCahon was- heard at her best 'in "The Carnival." and' th e due* - . "■Down the Vale" by Miss Gambling and Mr Andrews was Ave 1 ! rendered, and both items were encored. Mr R. H. Rockel concluded the musical portion of the programme! wi*-V a violin solo " Raff'si Cava,tina."' and his sympathetic rendering was doublv encored. * The entertainment was brought to a c\ci.*e with a gvmnaMic displav'b'y L. Serpe?l, F. Hall-Jones, M. O'Donoghw, A. J. Dalsrleish and d. Valentine, wdio were led.bv Mr,A. W.
