At the tallow auctions 1525: casks were offered, and 750 sold; mutton, fine, realised 36s 6d ; medium 33s 6d; beef, fine, 55s 3d; medium, 32s 6d. '1 AUSTRALIAN 'BUTTER. LONDON, May 1. Sir W J " Lyne, Commonwealth Minister of Trade, and. Customs, visited Tooley Street and inspected the landing of Australian butter. He interviewed severalimporters respecting grading, and they stated that they had no objection to grading which of an educational value for factories, but they were dissatisfied with the wav in which grading was at present performed. One importer said that more and better graders should be employed, and some should ba sent to England in order to learn the requirements of the trade. Sir W. J. Lyne explained that the system was only recently initiated in the Commonwealtn. He was trying to introduce it with a mininium of friction. His aim was to have the most efficient grading by competent graders* but it was difficult to distribute the best men all over Australia. He thought no one would deny that- grading had enhanced the value of New Zeaiand butters, and lie anticipated similar results for Australia.

Messrs Dalgety and Co. advise under date London, May Ist:—"Since our last telegram prices of mutton tallow in geneal ara unchanged; for other descriptions of tallow prices are- 3d to 6d higher. Competition is restricted." Messrs Webb and Kempthcrno received the following cable message from the Colonial Consignment and Distributing Company's London office: —Frozen meat. — Mutton, Canterbury, 4d; Napier, Wellington, and North Island, 3-j.d. • Lamb.— First quality, 53d ; second quality,' Beef, hindquarters, The Department of Industries and Commerce have received the following cable message from the High Commissioner, dated London, May Ist:—"The wool sales have commenced. There is a large attendance of buyers and active competition. Prices for merinos and fine crossbred of all grades are. firm,; prices for medium and coarse erorsbreds are slightly lower."
