BUCHANAN'S PADDOCK. Messrs Freme and Durkin waited on the Leve'.s County Council yesterday to ask for some improvements in the drainage of Buchanan's Paddock. Mr Fr.eme stated the necessity for some kind of drainage, and said they would be willing to pay a special rate lor' the convenience. He was paying £2 10s a*year in'rates now, and would have to pay £l4 a year if ths paddock joined the borough. They also desired to.-, have a couple of lamps. . ! A discussion took place on what would require to be. done to make the drainage satisfactory. The surveyor said, and the deputation agreed that' the first requisite was the inverting of the gully from Robert street, to the Belt, along which a quantity'of borough drainage now flows ten or. twelve, chains in an earth ditch. Mr Black added that there should be some .street channelling too, to'lead the drainage of the Paddock to the invert, ' Mr thought they could manage 'the side drains themselves if the invert we ,- e ma.de. ' The chairman suggested that the surveyor and Mr Mahony should mesfc the petitioners .on the ground,, and see what was, wanted, and the surveyor could give an estimate of the cost. If it was not a large amount, the residents" and Council might pay the whole cost at once and save the trouble of rating, • Mr Fr-seme agreed ' that that /would be a good way, and arrangements were made for the meeting. Regarding the lamps, Mr Mahony said the Gas Company ha'd asked £l7 10s to erect each lamp, and on hearing: this, Mr Freme. said they were not so anxious about the lights.'
