AUCKLAND, April 30. The question of making instruction in markmauship and military drill compulsory in universities and public secondary schools, and Government assistance towards the establishment of miniature rifle ranges throughout the colony, was urged on the. lion. G. Fowlds, Minister of Education, by a deputation ,from the. National Defence League of New Zealand this afternoon. It was also suggested tliat tin Government should include' instruction in ii2e shooting as one of the subjects, under the Manual and Technical Education Act. It was pointed out- that as the 303 .Tifle was being- discarded at Home, it would be a good opportunity for the New Zealand Government- to purchase, say, 150,000 of the old issve for usa in this colony. In replying, Mr Fowlds -said that some of tlii questions raised did not come within the scope of lus department, but he would be very pleased to put tTie matters befora til? Minuter concerned. He thought it <■> good thing that the youth of the colony should be taught, to islioot. but ha looked askance at any compulsory proposal, believing that better results could be got from a volunteer than a pressed man. He felt favourably disposed towards placing miniature ranges within the reach of everybody. The question of including rifle j-hocting as a subject under the Manual and IVelinical Education Act was one oil winch he was not prepared to. commit himself at- once. All flu representation.--: made woald be carefully enn-iiei'.d by the Cabinet.
