A railway pier in course of; construction at Baltimore suddenly collapsed.. Eight men were killed and eighteen injured. VILLAGE DESTROYED BY TORNADO.. EIGHT PERSONS PERISH. NEW YORE, April 29. A tornado destroyed the village of Hemzug, Texas, and eight persons, perished. Several fatalities occurred in the -neighbouring villages. A-fatal burning accident occurred to a man named Paul; Ehrhorn at Kairanga last night. The whare in which he lived was destroyed: by fire, and at midnight a neighbour was aroused by a noise, and on opening the door Ehrhorn, badly-."burnt," fell the' threshold. Medical assistance was procured; but the man died a't-3 ; o'clock'. Ehrhorn , was a single man, aged 25, and belonged to Rongotea. WOMAN SLOWLY POISONED. BLENHEIM,' April 30. . At the inquest on Mrs Caroline Cress, licensee of the Wairau Valley accommodation house, the evielence - showed. that deceased had been slowly poisoned by chewing tobacco, a habit- which ■ after twelve months cost her her life. The verdict was death by nicotine poisoning itaken whilst, of unsound mind. '
On Saturday night, Mr Dawson Bell, of Hook, was admitted -to Waimate Hospital suffering from serious cuts and bruises.. He was riding home from Waimate. when a. dog seared his horse, and Mr Bell j was thrown and dragged for .some distance.
