ORGAN RECITAL

, There was but a fair attendance in Trinity Church last evening for the organ recital given by Mr Edgar Randal, lhe coldness of the night was doubtless mucli to blame for this, but tliose who w ert present were by a good and enjojrab!e programme. The heavier and more exacting items Mendelssohn's Sonata 2*o. 2 and Bach's Fugue in A minor were well taken. In the third movement of the Srst-namsd, a little more light and shade would have been better, but the final was film and powerful. In Bach's Fugue some clean pedalling was shown and the subject was kept in view throughout e\-en he most strongly chorded passages. Cantilena (Grison) is an attractive composition with a gripping elusiye air, that got a sympathetic'exposition. The popular Andante in G was given by special request and had to be repeated. Mr Randal's rendition differed from the one usually adopted by . his legato style of emphasis in the phrase. His final runs were-free and rippling, and showed clean fingering. Dubois' Toccata was taken with spirit and fire, the movement being entered into with evident appreciation. Other works, given were—Le Carillon and Canzona (Wolstenholme), and Canzona (Wheeldcn). The choir was not in full strength, but nevertheless they gave two anthems —Stainei-'s " I am Alpta and Omego" and Sullivan's "Hearken Unto Me, My People," both being well taken. Miss Gallon s solo in tlie- former was true in pitch; firm yet sympathetic in tone, but- slightly lacking in finish. Miss : McCo.hon who was in good voice pleased everyone with Haddock's " The Soul's Awakening," her phrasing was good and she showed much repose in s -yle. The programme occupied about an hour and a- half and the audience appeared to enjoy it very much.
