CONCERT AT ST. MARY'S.

A very successful concert •■was held last night in St. Mary's schoolroom, Bank sfeeti in aid of the building fund of St.' Mary's" Sunday school, Waimataitai. The concert opened with a pianoforte solo by Miss Dewar "Dora Schonen," a mosit enjoyable item:....'-.Mr.'Bennett, who has a pleasing baritone voice sang "The Toilers,'' in a sympathetic manner. The next itemwas a "Snowfiake" song and dance, very prettily "rendered by twenty-four little girls under the direction of Misfe Meadow- • croft, whose good work was well repaid by an enthusiastic encore. Mrs Simmon'), a" singer new to Timaru audiences, sang "Daddy" (Behxend). Mrs Simmons lias a> » contralto voice of good quality, and sings with feeling. Mr Allen, who* is alsonmvto Timai'u audiences, gained a. decided' encore by his clever sketches: Next on the pro-' gramme came a garland dance performed by Misises Ogg, Clarkson, Glover, Amyes, E.' and K. Beckingham, Mayo, Guy, Schmidt, and Pe:acock, under the direction of.Miss Gambling. Both the costumes and the ; steps were . exceedingly pretty, and great praise was due to both instructor and performer's. The item was deservedly encored. The second half of the pro-; gramme opened with a .pianoforte duet, prettily played by the Misses.' McKenzie. Then 'came Highland: dances by' : Misses Shepherd -and* Horwel.lr accompanied, by Piper McGregor, which were also encored. Miss Hole sang "The . Love -Tide,-' most acceptably,' giving 'as ;ari eiicore "Slumber Sea," Mr Hector Spensley played one of Chopin's Nocturnes and in response to; an encore gave'.clever imitations on his violin, •of the organ and banjo.
