COMPLETION OF ST. MARY'S CHURCH.

We have received from the St. Mary'a Building Committee a well drawn and well printed lithograph of a drawing of St. Mary's Church, Timaru, as it is intended to appear when completed. The point of view—the opposite side of Sophia street, a little north of the line of the northern side of ,the church —has of course been selected to show the portion of the building that is to.be erected. The outstanding feature of the completed structure from that view-point is the tower, and the drawing shows this to be of admirable proportions and beautiful design, in the whole and in detail. The lower half of its height has a massive -appearance, broken only by a few windows. . The upper half, above the level of the chancel roof, is composed of columnar corners with the spaces between filled on each side with a pair of tall lancet-shaped louvres for the bell chamber, surmounted by a castellated walling. Each square corner column rises above this, and terminates in a" handsome miniature spire, and the central division between the pair of louvres also rises above the wall in a spiracle. Drawing and ground plan show the chancel extending a considerable distance beyond the tower towards Sophia street, in a somewhat plain end, with central three-light . window. Southward from this projects a square transept, and from this again an octagonal vestry, with conical roof. The drawing shows the-present rude clay front on Perth street transformed by half sloping it down' to'a retaining wall surmounted by an iron railing. The circulation of this drawing is calculated to assist the committee in their efforts, by inspiring people with a desire to see the ideal it represents become an accomplished fact.
