The best early varieties to plant are Ashleaf Kidneys, British Queen's, or the favourite- new early kidney, Sir John Llewellyn. This latter variety is undoubtedly the best of the recently introduced early potatoes., The tubers are very, handsome,'somewhat resembling the LapstoneV in shape, - ripen as' early as the old Ashleaf, and L are more productive than, any btherf\ early white potato ©n/tbis market. "In pqsrtkAu that are not n ;weU. sheltered and dry> at is not advisable to plant for come-time yet; far fierier to lay the. tubers'' in -shallow boxes itfr'trays and place then* a. well-lighted died, and allow, them to*'produce strong healthy shoote' before < being planted. Potatoes treated thus .will not be far (if any)* behind those that may. be .planted now," and in most cases will produce far better results. , Rhubarb, asparagus, raspberry,, or seal kale beds should be attended to (if not' already done); fresh beds may be formed,, or the old root® divided up and replanted where (necessary. The Orchard.—All fruit trees may now be pruned, and planting can be pushed »n in fine weather. The following varieties of apples have been proved to do well in this district, and are profitable sorts to grow:—Adams' Peanaain (a late dessert variety), Prince Bismarck (a very handsome cooking apple;', mid-season), Blenheim Orange (an old favourite mid-season cooking apple), Boston, Russet _(a fine desert kind and a late keeper)',' Cornish Aromatic, (rich red colour and first-class dessert quality), Cox's Orange Pippin {the best dessert apple in cultivation and fair keeper), Emperor Alexander (very large cooking, mid-season), • French Crab (very long keeping, cooking variety), Hawthornden (a great bearer* midVaeaeon, culinary), Lane's Prince Albert (large and prolific, l mid-season), Lord Wqlseley (long-keeping culinary apple), Perfection, (one of the best dessert, keeps well), Reinette du Canada (a grand apple, dessert or culinary, mid-season), Ribston Pippin (a wellknown desert variety), Stunner Pippin (g6od- quality dessert Jor culinary, late),,' Scarlet Nonpareil (a firm-fleshed dessert variety, 1 good bearer, and keeps well). The lime, - sulphur, .and ,salfc wash is.one of the most recommended; it is cheap, and where properly applied will be found very effective. 121bs of unslaked lime, lOlbs of sulphur, and 71bs of salt are required to make 30 gallons. To prepare this take Sbs of the lime, ,101bs of sulphur, and 10 gallons of water; "boil together until the sulphur is dissolved; take the remaining 71bs of lime and 71bs of salt, slake, and add enough water to make the whole 30 gallons; strain and spray on the trees. This mixture is best applied while warm, in the winter, and will have no injurious effect on the fruit buds or tree" whatever. -
