On the overseer's. reprvrJ- brought r for adoption, - fi ~- '

Councillor Mahony raised the question whether the re-formation of a street alongside the avenue recently prepared for planting in West Belt, had been authorised by the Council. He condemned the work as useless and even mischievous; the road would be worse than before. He believed tlis Council could not legally permit the avenue to'be planted, or at all events not fenced, as the fencing reduced the width below the legal standard width, 66 feet, without incurring a- penalty. He quoted passages from the Act bearing on the ' point. In reply to a question by Councillor Mahony, the overseer said the cost or the street work would be about £4O, and Councillor Mahony said the money. cov.ld have been more usefully spent. Councillors Harney and Parks approved of the TTsrk.

The Mayor ,said he made no conditions about street formation. He presented a plan for the planting of trees only, and the Council approved of it, and gave him permission to prepare the ground for plant-. ing. The street formation was a necessary consequence, and councillors'- who .had seen it,, considered it a.: great .improvement. ■ It was a double street, and when the fence was taken down it would be one streetagain. The Mayor read an opinion by the solicitor, to. the. Municipal Association, • that a local authority has power to fence off a part- of a street so long as-traffic is not interfered with. . Councillor Mahony persisted' that . the worfchad riot been authorised by the .Council,'..while more urgent works were left undone. : ' - The overseer's" report was adopted. Councillor Mahoav URGENT WCRKS. Councillor Wells drew, attention" to the necessity for having some improvements made in LeCren street without delay, as .an old street chert had been neglected for 20 years. ■ A request by residents interested in Lough;"street,, that the. street lie mads available, for vehicles', at a flight-expense, was granted. Councillor Wells dissenting in view of the greater Ksxrd for woi-K in LeCren street. Gouncilior Ma'aony drew attention to the facts that seme of the channels in Elizabeth street are choked' -wfrh ; vreeds* ard footpaths in Dee street' are sloped the wrong way so that they retail:; rain water. ■ —The Mayor replied that the Council now employ twice as many men as three years ago, and the expenditure - is up to the estimates, yet they cannot overtake all the work. "They must be content with doing the most urgent work, and lie believed that Timani compared favourably with other towns' in the state of the streets.' Councillor Hawkey drew, attention to the gorse growing on the. Belt near the Cemetery, and the. Mayor said the overseer should report on it. - - Accounts were passed for payment, and the Council -rose at 9'.15- pm. ' - -
