February 26. ~ Fourteen months ago the Government invited persons to compete for the bonus* offered for tiie best and .most economical ;me;u!s of eradicating the C'llifomian thistle. A' piece of land in Nwilr Otago was set aside for the purpose. «pd commissioner* iwere appointed to watch and report upon ilhe experiments. '„' These commissioners have now forwarded their report to the Secretary of the I)c----.pattment of Agriculture, in which they state tiiat the competitor* were unable t« eradicate the thistle, and they do not deem it oVlvisable to recommend payment, m whole or in part, to anyone of them. In many cases the mnin roots were destroyed, but the branch roois never hst their vitality.
