Lord Lansdowne protested against Use gross misrepresentation during the election* in reference to the t'oinoe question. If the Government beligvcd that slavery existed, they ought tj» institute an immediate inquiry. He complained of the inadequate information -respecting the Tran*vaal Constitution, and the plan* for Ireland. If the Government"* action was characterised by prudence and moderation the Government* need not fsar that the Lords would deliberately obstruct bupinew. Lord Ripon admitted that it was wrong to assert that the Chinese were manaclei. but the system was pne of Gemi-slavery. The "Times" in -commenting on the King's speech, says that there ate tnwr -thing* to watch, and but few to criticise at present. Few amendments ar a expected, and the Labour membets ate, fairly satisfied. - The WomenV Social" and Political Union held a great- meeting at Carton H.ill. Loudon. The speakers expressed much disappointment at tfc« omission -of any reference to. the enfranchisement of women in the King's speech.
