EMPLOYMENT ON THE RAILWAYS.
NKW REGULATIONS
Amended regulations under the Government Railway Departmental Classifies?ion Act are gazetted. Among other alterations it is provided that fo the case «4 asi engineering or drafting cadet the candidate must have— ;n) Sat for the junior civil st-rvico examination and have obtained not less than 50 per cent, of the maximum number of murks therein; ««r (bj passed the matriculation examination of the University of New Zealand. The candidate must in such case have taken two of the following subjects:—Mathematics, drawing, mechanics, and have obtained not lev* than 60 per cent, of the maximum number •>f marks therein. Kxcept in tbe case oi apprentices, every person who becomes a member of the Department, will be deemed to be on probation during the first ihiec years, and during that time bo will not be eligible for promotion, i An apprentice will be on probation for three months*, nnd will not be retained after the expiration of that period uniess a satisfactory certificate is given by the master to whom ha is apprenticed that he is suitable in every respect. Apprentices may be called upon to work when shops are closed for hoidays, but they will not be required to work overtime. Members in the traffic and stores branches who have served a* junior* for the full probationary period, and have been certified ns suitable for retention, may be rated and employed as signalmen, storemen, and shunters; and when so employed may be paid as such. Members of the maintenance branch, if provided with sleeping vans or huts, will be paid an allowance of Is per night. When travelling l»y sea at the expense of the department, saloon passages will be furnished to members (previously in such cases steerage passages were provided for members of the second division). Labour Day is added to the list of departmental holidays. Apprentices are exempted from the regulation under which members are to be paid compensation for accidents ns provided by the Workers' Compensation for Accidents Act.
