ZULUS' ATTACK ON POLICE

The natives near Richmond, Natal, having announced their refusal to pay the poll tax. two armed natives were arrested, but forty armed Zulus nmbu&bing the party of police,, the ringleader contemptuously struck Inspector Hunt in the face with the flat of his assegai Inspector Hunt shot, him dead. A melee ensued; the inspector ;md a trooper were killed, and the troopers were to "retirer one man riding" for miles with an assegai in his 'back. Martial law has been proclaimed, the carbineers and artillery are mobilising, the volunteers have been summoned, and tlie Transvaal authorities are guarding' the Swaziland borders owing to the Richmond outbreak.
