GOLF ENTHUSIASM.

ENGLISH PLAYERS - -GO TO MEXICO.

A Bsrtyof - -British jivj fessionaJs have gone out to Mexico to .take part in a big open tournament there.. Tha p.irty has been organised by Bernard Nicholls. one of the most- celebrated of American professionals who came over specially with a commission, from the president of the Mexico Country Club, the pro-1 moters of the •tournament. The terms include payment of full expenses and a bonus, Und thfe team should be able to hold their own against the American talent which will be brought out against them in Mexico, including Willie Anderson, the champion, and all the leading professionals. The tournament began on January 19, and continued until the end of the month. The chief object of the tournament is to popularise the Mexican Country Club with American players and the public generally, and to attract them to this district at a time of the year when golf is for the most part impracticable in the Northern states. "A wealthy set of financiers is behind the club in question, and they are spending their money very freely in the belief, that there is nothing like the promise of good golf as a bait for catching the American who is in a holiday mcod. As an example of the scale on which things are being done and of the extent to which Americans are before us in enthusiasm for the game, Nicholls says that on January 10 a special golfers' train will leave New York for Mexico to take players and spectators to this, tournament. It- will do the journey in three and a half days, and "will pick up contingents at Philadelphia, Boston, Cincinnati, St. Louis, and other places.
